Hello John, as you state yourself, low quality images will soon after publishing be paused and will stop appearing into duels. So more voting on images will weed out lower quality images faster.

    Hi John,

The system will also occasionally intentionally serve a low quality image to see if a user is voting fair.

If every contest hade a maximum limit och five (approximately) entries per user I think we could get rid of a lot of low quality images,

I used to dq a lot of extremely bad and rule bending images from my contests. That’s why I have a poor moderator rating…

Sad enough average image quality in this community is rather poor compared with other communities.

i don’t think I will pay for it any more.

Unfortunately, in the recent couple of years the quality of the images has dropped dramatically. Although technology is developing and now you can take amazing pictures even with a smartphone, Pixoto has been invaded by poor snaphots that do not meet a minimum of technical and aesthetic requirements. It didn't used to be like that, but a lot of good photographers left for different reasons.

I will leave too as soon as my pro membership ends. Unfortunately is the management of Pixoto ignorant and unfair. They have made some desicions who are absoluely unbelieveble on contests I have started and images I have entered. I wan’t pay for this.

And this month leader so far is an obvious and bad performed composit….*lol*…

Ugh!! Hate the composites! Some are good, but when the sunlight is coming from 2 different directions, the subject has a poor clipping path or is completely a different tone than the surroundings- it's just bad. The worst are when the subject; car, airplane, train locomotive or whatever still has a bit of the original background in a window against the new background. Do people even look at their finished product?!

What’s even worse is that the outcomes of the votings often are extremely strange. I get the impression that a lot of members don’t know the first thing about photography. I get surprised every day when I scroll ”yesterdays top images”.

And this month top image so far… Is it a joke or just embarrasing?

Image scores are relative to their respective categories. An image can not be the top image for the month when only 7 days have passed in the month.  There is no way for it to have enough experience.  Outcomes of votings are irrelevant because statistically it is based on how the image does over time relative to it's peers.

If you don't not seeing any given user's images, you can block them and you will never see their images again.

Low scoring images are irrelevant because they are paused within a few votes.

    I wrote ”so far…”

I know about blocking. I’m using that frequently. I have blocked about a dozen people witch reduces the daily entries with about 100. Today 183 actually…Got rid of a lot of flowers that way…

Perhaps we could introduce category filtering where you won't see a particular category anymore? I agree, seeing too many flowers can be annoying.

I agree.  I am shocked at the poor quality of many of the pictures being submitted now.  Furthermore, these pictures seem to be winning more duels.  It doesn't make sense when a very poor image is up against an obviously better image and wins.  I get the feeling that some voters are deliberately sabotaging better images.  For what purpose I am not sure.

Category filtering would be a good idea. Now I had to block two guys who’s images to 95 percent are trains. Blocking trains maybe would be better.

Yes, Dawn, I also have the feeling that some voters delibaretly sabotage better images. All my images that reached way over 700 points are now constantly backing. As soon as they have less then 700 points they stop backing. That’s somewhat suspicious.

If user is deliberetly voting against better images, such user will quickly be blocked from voting by system that is checking exactly that behaviour (and not only that behaviour but any other voting behaviour that is “not normal”).

    Here's an example:  https://www.pixoto.com/images-photography/flowers/flower-gardens/6489871949889536

I hate to call anyone out, but this image just won against one of my images in a duel.  The image is blurry and not even in focus.  Furthermore, it has won 35 times and lost 37 so almost 50-50…for a blurry image.  It has a 454 score while my in focus image has a lower score of 434 and has only won 19 image duels while losing 23 duels.  https://www.pixoto.com/images-photography/flowers/single-flower/butchart-gardens-5171249654661120

I have another suggestion: Maybe it's time to skip the moderator rating. What use is it anyway? I have tried to uphold the quality of this community by dq-ing obviously rulebending images or images that don't live up to the spirit of the contest at all - and the “thanks" I get is a poor moderator rating.

Catching up here on my original post. Glad to see I’m not the only one fed up on image quality. I thought maybe it was the grumpy old man coming out in me. 😆  I have never sponsored a contest, but if I did, limiting the number of submissions would be the first contest rule. I have participated in plenty, but I think the most images I have ever submitted was maybe 5-7. That just seems fair. I do appreciate the unlimited skips now available in the contest 1:1s while voting, but I guess I should really pick the ‘worst’ of the two bad images to at least help sideline one bad image. I don’t know what the answer is other than leaving Pixoto and joining a different peer driven contest website. Keep shooting! Just keep it sharp, well exposed and level. 🧐

With that said I hope the management can figure out a way to increase the average image quality because I think the concept of this community is great and very amusing. But it is quite boring to see all those nonsense entries.

    How about this:

    https://www.pixoto.com/images-photography/abstract/macro/horse-5912531683377152

Why in earth submit such a bad photo?

    0
  • Dawn Hoehn Hagler

Well, it is in the abstract category!  And it currently has 0 wins and 11 loses.  At least we know people are not voting for it to sabotage other photos.

Eleven ongoing community contests. I think that this community is in it’s death convulsions.

And the number of entries in the contests has been extremely low for a couple of days.

Today I scrolled this months leaderboard from the bottom and up. It’s really pathetic. Why do people submit all those bad and totally meaningless images? How is it even possibly to capture so bad photos with a modern cellphone? In a lot of duels it’s rather hard to decide witch is the worst of the two really bad images.
